Hello, my name is Todd Green.  Since June 2017, I have been the Highland Herd Manager for Ledyard Farms.  On June 7 &8, 2019, Ledyard Farms will be hosting the Northeast Spring Gathering.  The farm hosted this same event in 2007, however the farm has grown in many aspects since then.  The farm has been in the Haines Family since the early 1900’s. Today brothers, Doug and William Haines own the farm and have been restoring and adding to the main property since 2001.
Ledyard Farms is a world class Morgan Horse breeding facility located in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of Upstate NY.  We are the largest Morgan Horse farm in New York State with one of the most successful Morgan breeding and embryo transfer programs in the country.   Our goal is to breed and grow the finest bred Morgan foals each year with the capacity to show successfully in Park and English pleasure divisions. We currently own about 60 horses that are housed either at the farm or at trainers in three different states.  In 2017 Ledyard horses won seven World Champion Titles and in 2018 we won five. When you visit the farm on Jun2 8th you will be able to see this year’s foal crop.
In 2015, Ledyard Farms began growing hops, the flavoring ingredient in beer.  While you are at the farm, we will be taking a wagon ride through the hops yard and on Saturday evening we are planning an evening at one of the World Class wineries in King Ferry for dinner and beer made with Ledyard Farm’s hops.
We also have a flock of Jacob Sheep on the farm.  Jacob sheep are known for their horns, they have 2-6 horns. We sell wool blankets and meat, which can be purchased at the farm.
Ledyard Farms has had a herd of Scottish Highland Cattle since 2003 and have shown and marketed the cattle since that time.  At one point, the herd had grown to 75 head however as the Horse breeding program grew, more room was needed for horse paddocks and housing so downsizing of the highland herd has occurred.  In June 2017 owner, Doug Haines asked me if I would be the Highland cattle herd manager. I accepted the offer. My wife, Ginny and I have a dairy cattle background. I asked Doug what his goals were for the highland program and he stated he wanted to have 20-25 head that people can enjoy when they visit the farm that are not afraid of people and to have cattle worthy of showing.  He asked how long before I thought we could start showing again and I said 2-3 years. In the spring of 2018 we showed 3 animals at the Northeast Show in Springfield, Massachusetts and loved it. We had showed dairy cattle for many years but did not know much about showing Scottish Highland Cattle. All the exhibitors were very friendly and helpful, we learned a lot and our cattle did well for a couple of rookies.  The first heifer we showed won her class, the second heifer was second but Reserve Champion of her Division. We caught the bug and continued to show these 2 heifers at the Mercer, PA show, NY State Fair and Harrisburg Kile Show. The 2 heifers were either first or 2nd in their classes at all the shows we attended, and we look forward to showing again in 2019.
While you are at the farm we will have a picnic lunch, tour of the farm showing you the horses, sheep, cattle, hop yard and some of the twenty miles of trails we have on the thousand acres now owned by Ledyard Farms.   Fishing and camping by the Farm pond will be available as well as trails for hiking.
The Picnic Cost will be approximately $15.00/ person for the catered picnic featuring Ledyard Farms Highland burgers, side dishes and dessert.
